Hot on the heels of the international premiere of the second season of the Rising of the Shield Hero anime series, One Peace Books will release the official audiobook edition of the second volume of Aneko Yusagi’s light novel series on May 3. The novel is read by actor Kurt Kanazawa, who recently appeared in Grey’s Anatomy.

French tattoo model & makeup artist Eloïse Jéglot has earned the Guinness World Record for the largest privately owned collection of Studio Ghibli memorabilia. Presently her collection numbers nearly 1,500 items.

Quibi to Film Tomie

Cell phone video producer Quibi has revealed plans for a live-action series based on horror manga author Junji Ito’s 1987-2000 manga series Tomie. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina co-star Adeline Rudolph will headline the series written by Aquaman screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and directed by horror film veteran Alexandre Aja (High Tension, Piranha 3D, Crawl).

Ito’s Tomie manga revolving around an immortal teenage girl has been adapted into eight Japanese live-action movies, a three-episode Japanese television series, and two short episodes of the 2018 Junji Ito Collection anime television series.

Zac Bertschy R.I.P.

Long time Anime News Network journalist Zac Bertschy passed away yesterday, May 21st, 2020. Zac was well known among anime fans for his acerbic perspective on anime, yet despite his frequent and intense criticisms, he was also a constant and devoted fan of the medium.

I never knew Zac well. He treated me to lunch once during the 2004 Anime Boston convention, and I spoke to him briefly at a few Anime Expo conventions. Although cynical, he always seemed personable and good-humored. His passing is certainly untimely and unfortunate.

KyoAni Tragedy

Hours ago a disgruntled 41-year-old Kyoto man reportedly charged into the Kyoto Animation studio building, doused the building with gasoline, and set the building alight, killing 33 employees.

Sentai Filmworks has established a “Help KyoAni Heal” GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to support and encourage the beloved company.

The studio and its families, and otaku worldwide, have our deepest, heartfelt sympathies and condolences. I’m personally heartbroken over this tragic event.

Trailer Released for Lupin the III: The First

Toho Pictures has released the first trailer for director Takeshi Yamazaki’s full CG anime film Lupin Sansei: The First. Yamazaki has directed prior full CG anime films including Friends: Naki on Monster Island (2011), Stand by Me Doraemon (2014), and Dragon Quest: Your Story (2019). The movie will open in Japanese theaters on December 6.

Lupin the III creator Monkey Punch passed away on April 11, 2019.

Personally, I think Jigen looks a bit too skinny, but otherwise this film looks quite thrilling and faithful to the brand.

Wind Princess Teaser

Earlier this month Brazilian amateur filmmaker Chris Tex released the first global teaser trailer for his live-action short film Wind Princess, evidently an abbreviated live-action remake of a portion of Hayao Miyazaki’s modern classic 1984 anime film Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind.

1st Battle Angel Trailer Released

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Alita: Battle Angel, producer James Cameron & director Robert Rodriguez’s long-gestating American live-action film adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s beloved Gunnm manga series. All evidence from this trailer suggests that the film will adapt the manga’s first story arc.

Judging by this brief look, this adaptation looks comparable in design, and just a bit more faithful to its source material than Rupert Sanders’ Ghost in the Shell movie. So hopefully “Alita” will fare better in critical and viewer reception than GitS did. Personally, I like the look of Alita’s arms. I appreciate Rodriguez’s seemingly deliberate effort to make actress Rosa Salazar’s eyes appear just a bit bigger and rounder, more “anime-like,” even if the effect is a bit unsettling. I do wish this trailer placed a bit more emphasis on action and the brutal world view than on the juvenile fiction-style teen angst angle. But considering the target audience for this film, and that this is the first of several trailers to come, the presentation may be appropriate after all.

Batman Ninja Full Trailer Released

Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki’s influence is very prominent in the first trailer for studio Kamikaze Douga’s original Batman Ninja feature film. Mushiking movie director Junpei Mizusaki is directing the film from English language original scripts by Leo Chu & Eric Garcia translated into Japanese by Gurren Lagann & Kill la Kill screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima. Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki provided the film’s character designs. Composer Yugo Kanno (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure TV, Psycho-Pass) is scoring the film.

I appreciate the trailer’s suggestion that the film is pulling out all the stops and really indulging its wild Batman family transported to an alternate history feudal Japan.
