They made all this pro-quality animation, but couldn’t gather up enough female voice talent for the deadline I guess.

And maybe this is just me talking, but the animation is professional almost to a fault. It looks like a run-of-the-mill anime production– as nice as a premiere episode of a TV show, but thoroughly sterile. I expect doujin anime to look _different_, in a rough-but-expressive way that makes them interesting to look at. There was another Touhou doujin-anime maybe a couple years back that had a cool fan-animated roughness to it.

Interesting to see its interpretation of bullet hell combat, though.

Touhou is something I never fully understood the appeal of, from the corny bullet hell shooter games to Zun’s official manga series (by various names & artists). Despite the rich mythology of the setting and the eccentric character designs, it never really seemed that interesting in practice. The fandom sure does produce a lot of great-looking bishoujo fan art, though.
