I always took the fact that the appearances were similar despite highly different characters as a setting element that reinforced the contrast to reality.

Using them in Twilight Bracelet made sense for plot reasons and was heavily lampshaded by people recognizing the characters (who themselves were won in a contest), so that was fine by me.
