Ackerman and two other old cats from his generation, Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury, were (and still are) each very close friends from back in the day. If I recall correctly, one of the key moments in his decision to pursue sci-fi was when he and his two buddies went and saw KING KONG (1933) when it was first released.
